Cambridge Health Alliance
CT Imaging Suites
Cambridge and Everett, MA
Precise coordination was key to helping Cambridge Health Alliance upgrade three CT units while maintaining patient care and operations. MCM worked closely with the CT supplier to ensure the spaces were ready for the new units on the delivery date, and with the staff at Whidden and Cambridge Hospitals to maintain patient care and ensure appropriate infection control.

Cambridge Health Alliance was faced with the challenge of upgrading two existing CT scans in two different facilities, and building out a new imaging suite in a third location.
All three projects required thoughtful design and construction to ensure minimal disruption to patients and staff throughout the project. Precise coordination with the CT equipment supplier was necessary so that the spaces were ready for the new CT units on the delivery dates. Strict infection controls, including sensitivity to noise, dust and interim life safety measures, were also necessary to ensure the hospital environment stayed free of contaminants during construction.
At Whidden Hospital, MCM provided design/build services to combine two adjacent rooms into a new imaging suite. The space had not been used for CT services in the past, and so the design included the requirements necessary to accommodate the new CT equipment and shielding. MCM conducted demolition of the existing walls to combine the two spaces, and provided the design and construction to fit out the new imaging suite.
At Somerville and Cambridge Hospitals, CHA was upgrading existing CT equipment. This required the old machines to be removed and the new machines to be installed – all while ensuring patient care continued uninterrupted. Precise schedule coordination was crucial to ensure the CT suites could continue to operate throughout the project. MCM worked closely with the equipment supplier so that the space would be ready, and the old equipment would be removed, on the day the new equipment was scheduled to arrive.
The swap-out was conducted over a single weekend, during which the two hospitals remained open and continued to provide care. Patients who required CT scans were temporarily transferred to another of CHA’s facilities for the weekend. The new equipment was installed seamlessly, and on schedule, allowing CHA to quickly return to regular patient services.
